Heilbad Hoheneck – Mineralwasser in ruhiger Lage

Conclusion

The Swabian Alb region

Once a tropical sea, today a low mountain range with a wide high plateau and impressive views. The Swabian Alb fascinates with its ancient landscape, shaped by nature, time, and history. Between the Albtrauf, cave art, and healing springs, unspoiled nature, beautiful hiking trails, cultural heritage, and relaxation come together. With seven spas and health resorts, the region invites you to relax, experience nature, and discover places steeped in history. These are Aalen, Beuren, Bad Urach, Bad Ditzenbach, Bad Boll, Bad Überkingen, and Mössingen-Bad Sebastiansweiler.

Nature and remedies

The region offers many opportunities and products for your own health. These include:

Soil, mud, and rock

Mud, moor, clay, or peat, known as peloids, are natural remedies that have been used in balneotherapy for centuries. Formed by geological and biological processes, they are rich in minerals and organic substances and can naturally support health, regeneration, and well-being. Fango is particularly abundant in the Swabian Alb region.

Fango comes from Italian and means “healing mud.” It is a mineral, inorganic healing mud from volcanic deposits. The raw material for fango can be, for example, oil shale from ancient marine rock. This is rich in minerals such as calcium and silicon and in organic deposits containing the active ingredients phosphorus and sulfur. It is used in heat therapy, among other things, as a partial pack, whereby the heated fango packs promote blood circulation, relieve pain, and relax the muscles.

Jurafango remedy

Bad Boller Jurafango, now part of Dr. R. Heberer Heilmittel GmbH, has a long tradition: in 1965, Stuttgart-based physician and naturopath Dr. Reinhard Heberer developed healing compresses from local fango powder. Since then, this natural remedy has been carefully produced in Bad Boll.

But what exactly is Jurafango? Jurafango is extracted from slate in the company's own quarry belonging to Dr. R. Heberer Heilmittel GmbH, finely ground, and processed into powder. Mixed with hot water, the fango becomes a kind of paste that can be packed in cloths and soft packs and applied warm or cold.

Activities in the region

The region also offers many opportunities for relaxation, as well as for discovering nature and learning about its history.

Deep and hot springs
The Swabian Alb is rich in springs and waterfalls. Many of these watercourses originate in underground cave systems, not all of which have been explored. These include the Urach Waterfall, one of the most famous natural highlights of the Swabian Alb and part of the UNESCO Geopark and Biosphere Reserve. The water plunges around 40 meters over the tuff stone edge. An impressive natural spectacle that can be observed from below or from a bridge above the waterfall.

Selection of thermal spas in the Swabian Alb

The AlbThermen in Bad Urach: They combine the charm of the 1970s with modern wellness facilities. Thermal water heated to up to 38°C bubbles up from the depths every day into six indoor and outdoor pools. The sauna area with seven hot air baths, panoramic views, and outdoor area ensures relaxation. A restaurant, massages, and a wide range of treatments make for the perfect relaxation experience.

The Panorama Therme Beuren:
In the 1,000 m² pool area, seven thermal pools and one cold water pool, a steam bath, a thermal grotto, and a spacious sauna area invite you to relax.

Vinzenz Therme in Bad Ditzenbach:
The thermal mineral water at Vinzenz Therme in Bad Ditzenbach comes from the Canisius spring and is particularly rich in natural carbon dioxide. Its temperate warmth promotes blood circulation and oxygen supply and promotes relaxation. The modern facility with bathing and sauna areas as well as relaxation rooms invites you to unwind.

Mineral Spa in Bad Boll:
A special water experience that can enhance both physical and mental well-being. In addition to the soothing warmth of the indoor pools, there is a cozy sauna lounge and various therapy groups during the day. A highlight for relaxation is the outdoor pool with a view of the Swabian Alps.

Healing tunnel - Relaxing tranquility underground

In the healing tunnel of Aalen, visitors can expect a unique combination of tranquility, soothing air, and a unique microclimate. Constant temperatures of 6-8°C and almost 100% humidity ensure particularly pure air that is enriched with valuable minerals. A stay in the tunnel can strengthen the immune system, alleviate respiratory diseases, and bring body and mind into harmony.

Hiking trails

The Swabian Alb is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts: over 90 premium and quality trails certified by the German Hiking Association or the German Hiking Institute guarantee the highest quality experience. At the striking Albtrauf escarpment, spectacular viewing rocks offer views as far as the Black Forest and the Alps. In between lie sunny juniper heaths, blossoming orchards, turquoise spring pools, and mysterious caves. Whether you're looking for a short circular tour or an extended day hike, you can discover natural and cultural highlights alike on well-signposted trails close to nature. All tours are listed on albwandern.de, allowing you to choose your own personal favorite. Two of these hiking routes in the region are:

Bad Überkingen:
Here you go high up on the Löwenpfad "Felsenrunde" trail. On this scenic circular route, there is diverse nature and many highlights. The starting point is below the Hausener Wall. From there, the path leads over a steep serpentine trail through beech forest to the Alb plateau. At Jungfraufelsen and Hausener Eck, spectacular views of the Fils Valley open up. After reaching the highest point of the tour (751 m), the trail continues through Oberböhringen, past the shelter at Dreimännersitz and the Schillertempel, through orchards and juniper heaths, back to Bad Überkingen. Those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation after the hike can recharge at the thermal baths in Bad Überkingen.

Mössingen – Bad Sebastiansweiler:
In Mössingen, there are excellent opportunities for hiking or walking. Four certified premium hiking trails, the Dreifürstenstieg, the Firstwaldrunde, the Leisawegle, and the Streuobstwegle. In addition, there is the Wir-Mössinger-Rundweg, which was created on the occasion of the city's 50th anniversary in 2024. It connects all the districts with each other, strengthens the sense of community within the city, and at the same time makes the diverse special features of the individual districts tangible.

Conclusion

The Swabian Alb combines impressive nature, thousands of years of history, and a wide range of health services. Whether hiking along the Albtrauf, relaxing in thermal baths and healing caves, or exploring geological treasures, the region offers ideal conditions for relaxation, activity, and cultural discoveries.

The Upper Swabia Moor Region

Whether gentle hills, crystal-clear lakes, or ancient moorlands: Upper Swabia shows nature at its most pristine. Since the last ice age, the moor has shaped the landscape, which is mysterious, calming, and full of life. This idyllic setting, with its charming, historic towns and a variety of natural highlights, invites you to explore. A place where you can literally immerse yourself in the moor and feel the power of a unique ecosystem.

Natural paradise and habitat

The moorland region in Baden-Württemberg, more precisely in Upper Swabia, is a unique natural area steeped in history: around 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, raised bogs and fens formed here, which still characterize the region today. These are much more than just fascinating natural backdrops; they are habitats full of biodiversity and, at the same time, retreats for anyone seeking peace and regeneration. You can experience this up close on numerous hiking and cycling trails. Whether through outdoor activities or soothing moor baths, the healing power of the moor makes every encounter something special. Numerous initiatives and associations are committed to preserving these ecosystems and invite young and old alike to discover them consciously.

Three moor highlights at a glance:

The Federseemoor in Bad Buchau: A 1.5 km long wooden walkway leads deep into the reeds and offers nature experiences all year round. On a clear day, the view from the observation tower stretches all the way to the Alps.

The Wurzacher Ried: The “Riedrunde” trail leads through one of the most beautiful high moor landscapes in southern Germany, offering impressive insights dating back to the Ice Age.

The Steinacher Ried near Bad Wurzach: A circular hiking trail leads through these pristine moors and shows how a raised bog has developed over thousands of years.

Moor bathing – wellness and healing

The moor is not only a scenic highlight, but also a proven remedy. Especially in the moor spas of Bad Buchau, Bad Wurzach, and Bad Waldsee, the valuable peat unfolds its beneficial effects on joint problems, metabolic disorders, or simply for deep relaxation. Heated to a pleasant 45 degrees Celsius with thermal water, the peat can become a healing bath for body and soul. An experience that combines relaxation and regeneration in a completely natural way. Important: a preliminary consultation with a doctor is required before the moor bath to ensure that nothing stands in the way of the treatment.

Activities in the region:

In addition to the moors, Upper Swabia offers numerous other opportunities for outdoor adventures, water sports, and relaxation:

High up in the climbing forest
For anyone who wants to combine exercise and nature, the climbing forest in Bad Waldsee offers athletic challenges surrounded by greenery. Visitors can view the forest from a new perspective at lofty heights.

The Wackelwald
The Wackelwald in Bad Buchau is a real highlight for explorers of all ages. An exciting nature trail takes you through a boggy forest with “wobbly” ground. Definitely an experience you won't forget.

The Nature Theme Park
The Nature Theme Park in Bad Saulgau is fun for the whole family. There are 12 interactive nature discovery stations where you can learn about the diverse nature of the region.

Pure relaxation with Kneipp & Moor
Bad Waldsee is a true oasis of well-being for holistic relaxation. Here, the power of the earth meets the healing effects of Kneipp therapy. The oldest and largest Kneipp association in Germany is based here.

Conclusion

Upper Swabia combines natural beauty, healing powers, and cultural diversity. In spa towns such as Bad Buchau, Bad Wurzach, Bad Waldsee, and Bad Saulgau, those seeking relaxation will find peace and renewed energy. The region slows down, inspires, and stays in your heart. A trip here is a treat for all the senses.

Moor cheese from Bad Wurzach: a regional specialty

Moor and cheese - how do they go together? Quite simply: Moor cheese is made at the Vogler cheese dairy in Bad Wurzach in the Allgäu region. This unique specialty combines regional tradition with innovative ideas and can only be found in and around Bad Wurzach. But how did this extraordinary cheese come about and what makes it so special?

Tradition and innovation

The Vogler cheese dairy in Bad Wurzach looks back on a long history. It has been shaping cheese culture in the region since the 19th century. It was founded because the economic situation at the time forced people in the region to come up with new ideas. At that time, mainly soft cheese was produced.

In 1936, Michael Vogler took over the cheese dairy and switched production to hard cheese, in particular the well-known Allgäu Emmental. Jörg Vogler has been running the family business since 1955 and has constantly expanded the product range. The cheese products are marketed both directly at the cheese dairy and via regional partners. Visitors can sample the specialties on site in the Sennerstüble.

Thanks to his son Jahn Vogler, the future of the family business is also secure. He has introduced the online store and will one day also take over the management of the cheese dairy.

How did moor cheese come about?

The moor cheese is truly unique and is produced exclusively at the Vogler cheese dairy. The idea arose from the desire to create something new and unique that captures the essence of the moorland region and represents it to the outside world. The name “Moor Cheese” is protected - no one else is allowed to use it except for the Vogler cheese dairy. This means that this specialty remains exclusive to the region around Bad Wurzach.

Production of bog cheese

The Vogler cheese dairy relies on traditional craftsmanship and natural ingredients. All products are made from high-quality Allgäu milk, cheese cultures, natural rennet and table salt. The finished cheeses weigh between 1 and 80 kilograms and mature for between two and ten months, depending on the variety. They are regularly cared for during this process.

But now to the bog cheese. What makes it different from a normal wheel of cheese?

Moor cheese is basically no different to other cheeses in terms of production, but the moor as a natural resource has a major influence. The milk used comes from cows from the moorland region, so the cheese has the unmistakable flavor of the region. Between 500 and 600 kilograms are produced every two weeks.

In terms of taste, it also stands out from classic Allgäu Emmental: the moor cheese is characterized by a mild, natural note and a pleasant lightness. Thanks to a maturing process without flavor enhancers in its own wax layer and with a maturing temperature of 38 C°, it develops the authentic taste of the “original cheese”.

Popular among cheese fans

Moor cheese has already found many fans. Delicatessens and farmers' markets within a 50-kilometre radius of Bad Wurzach offer the specialty. The cheese dairy also attracts numerous visitors to Bad Wurzach, who can learn the secrets of cheese production on cheese tours and taste the cheese in the cozy hut restaurant.

Of course, the moor cheese can also be conveniently ordered via the Vogler cheese dairy's online store - this is how it finds its way to cheese lovers all over Baden-Württemberg.

Journey of discovery to the Volzem stones in the Dobel

The Volzemer Steine are a geological highlight and fascinating natural monument in the northern Black Forest. The stones, a sea of rocks on the Dobel, are also known as the “Champagne Stones”. They can be reached via various hiking trails such as the Engel-Weg-Dobel, the Waldhistorischer Erlebnisweg, Annis-Abenteuerweg and the Westweg. For those who want to delve deeper into the topic of “stones and geology”, the GeoTour Dobel offers an outdoor adventure where the topic is brought closer to the whole family with exciting exploration tasks and research questions.

The Dobel

The summit village of Dobel lies on a 700 m high mountain with an old pass road. The wide, almost fog-free high plateau between the Alb and Enz valleys is a real island of sunshine and a vantage point. It is not only a popular hiking destination in summer, but also offers opportunities for winter hikes, cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes in winter. Geologically speaking, the Dobel belongs to the “Grinde”, a partially boggy red sandstone ridge. On the “Dreimarkstein-Dobel” section of the Pforzheim-Basel Westweg trail, you can discover the sea of rocks known as the Volzemer Steine. These used to be called “crystal sandstones” as their surface glittered strikingly.

©Kurverwaltung Dobel
©Kurverwaltung Dobel

The origin of the Volzem stones

Anyone who comes across the rocks in the middle of the forest is amazed, because discovering such rocks on what is actually flat terrain is impressive. But why are there such mighty boulders in this flat environment, some of which are standing and others lying down?

The Volzemer Steine are fragments of former rock faces that were formed by geological processes such as faulting and erosion. Water penetrated the rock through fissures, froze in winter and broke open the rocks. They broke and remained on the site. These boulders, some of which are upright and some of which are scattered, are made of middle red sandstone with quartz crystals that make the rock glisten in the sun.

Geological details and use

The Volzemer Stones belong to the main conglomerate of the Middle Bunter Sandstone. According to the new geological map, the Large Volzemer Stone is assigned to the “crystal sandstone” subformation and the Small Volzemer Stone to the scree sandstone. They were formed around 250 million years ago in the Triassic period. In the past, millstones were made from the fine-grained rock. The blanks were hewn from the rocks and finished on site. Unsuccessful millstones, so-called “burr stones”, could often only be reworked into smaller millstones. Because of their resemblance to millstones from Champagne (France) and their sparkle in the sun, they were called “champagne stones”. The millstones from the region had good grinding properties and were economically important.

The Dobel GeoTour

The GeoTour Dobel offers an exciting opportunity to learn more about the geological features of the region. Exploratory tasks and research questions turn the tour into an educational outdoor experience. Topics such as rock castles, boulder heaps, boulder seas, shifting boulders, scree sandstone and slab sandstone are explained in a clear way. A GeoBox for €12.50 and the GeoKompakt brochure are available from the Bad Herrenalb tourist information office and supplement the tour with additional knowledge about geology.

Drinking fountain tour through Stuttgart

Stuttgart is Germany's mineral water capital! There are a total of 19 publicly accessible drinking fountains, which are fed by various springs. Because the springs run through different layers of rock and are enriched with different minerals, no two taste the same. A good opportunity to sharpen your senses on a mineral water tasting tour!

On the road with Dominik Kuhn

Dominik "Dodokay" Kuhn is a producer, comedian and musician. He is curious about everything. He recently drew attention to Stuttgart's public baths with his radio commercial for them and simply wants to find out more about them - no sooner said than done! Together we visited the Bad Cannstatt fountains and tasted the mineral water.

Wilhelmsbrunnen fountain and Daimler spring

Just behind the Kursaal in Bad Cannstatt's Kurpark, you will come across these two drinking fountains, which have very different tastes: The Daimler spring tastes very salty.

Lautenschläger fountain

The fountain, named after the lute-playing statue in its center, is also located in the Kursaal grounds of Bad Cannstatt and is fed from Wilhelmsbrunnen II.

Wilhelm's Fountain II

The mineral water from the two Wilhelmsbrunnen wells comes from the same borehole. However, the water is drawn from different depths - and you can taste that too.

"Of course, I've been to all of Stuttgart's thermal spas," says Kuhn, who is always busy in Bad Cannstatt, "but this was my first time in the beautifully renovated Berg mineral baths." He has only ever taken a passing interest in the brine and healing water, but now it was time for a proper test.

He took three things away from the tasting tour in Bad Cannstatt: "Firstly, the three springs taste similar, but not the same, secondly, I am convinced that the water is not only healthy, but also boosts creativity, and thirdly, my favorite is the Daimler spring - because of the taste, of course." He winks.

Got a taste for it?

Would you also like to test yourself through Stuttgart's drinking fountains or taste fresh mineral water near you? You can find more information about the location and mineral content of Stuttgart's drinking fountains here. But you will also find what you are looking for outside of Stuttgart! In many spa towns in Baden-Württemberg with their own mineral water springs, you can enjoy freshly tapped medicinal and mineral water.

In Bad Mergentheim's Brunnentempel, for example, the water from the three local springs is even offered at different drinking temperatures.

Here is a small selection of places where you can taste fresh mineral water at drinking fountains:

19 dream tours in Baden-Württemberg

From short circular trails to stage tours, from contemplation trails to adventure trails: the spas and health resorts in Baden-Württemberg turn nature into an experience. Here you will find 19 special strolling, walking and hiking trails in the countryside:

No. 04 - Reflection trail in Bad Rappenau

This approximately four-kilometre circular trail was created in collaboration with the Protestant and Catholic chaplaincies and is reminiscent of the tradition of Christian contemplation. 15 themed stations invite you to pause and ask yourself questions about your life's journey, to find moments of contemplation in nature and to experience creation from a new perspective.

No. 10 - Wolf trails in Höchenschwand

Although the relaxing atmosphere of the forest will also have an effect here, the Wolfspfad and Wolfssteig are more about information than meditation. On the Wolf Trail, children and families accompanied by the mascot "Lupus" go on an exciting and playful journey of discovery into the world of wolves. The Wolf Trail leads over 22 kilometers from Waldshut-Tiengen to Höchenschwand. This varied trail through rustic forests and steep gorges also offers a wealth of information about wolves. Both trails converge at the Wolfshütte, where you can learn more about the possible return of wolves to their former home in the Black Forest.

No. 13 - Slow hiking in Waldbronn

Take a relaxed stroll through the forest instead of marching from A to B. Just be there, looking at, listening to and smelling nature. And immerse yourself even deeper in the healing forest atmosphere with breathing, mindfulness and meditation exercises: The forest bathing events in Waldbronn also bring us back to the moment. And you don't necessarily have to take the whole day: With after-work forest bathing, even two hours are enough to completely forget the stresses of everyday life.
