In the southern Black Forest, sun-kissed highlands meet bubbling thermal springs. From Königsfeld to Badenweiler, exercise, prevention, and joie de vivre take center stage. Here, health is not prescribed, but experienced—among vineyards, springs, and sweeping views.
Health resorts in the southern and northern Black Forest are characterized by a climate that promotes good health, offering cool, fresh air, light, and sufficient sunlight. Cool stimuli can help to strengthen the body and support the immune system. Daylight can help to alleviate the “winter blues.”
Sunlight is also important for vitamin D production. The health resorts in the southern and northern Black Forest include:
In healing caves, such as the former Teufelsgrund silver mine in Münstertal, a place with a healing cave spa, the cool climate with high humidity is used to treat respiratory diseases. Overall, exercise in a healing climate is simply good for you, can strengthen your immune system, and boost your metabolism.
In addition to the air and nature, it is also the water that offers relaxation and well-being in health resorts. Water can have a positive effect on our health – for example, in the form of Kneipp therapy. In addition to water treatments, it also includes the elements of nutrition, medicinal plants, and balance to harmonize body, mind, and soul. Only towns that offer all five healing factors of the therapy and have appropriately trained specialists and natural water sources are allowed to call themselves Kneipp health resorts. The health resorts that bear the title of Kneipp spa/health resort include:
In the forests of the health resorts of the southern and northern Black Forest, exercise, relaxation, and regeneration can be combined: through forest bathing, on health trails, or through conscious breathing in the clear mountain air. The forest helps to prevent illness and promote health. For example, through hiking, cycling, or outdoor activities. Above all, however, it helps prevent stress. Unfortunately, stress is part of everyday life for many people – which makes places where body and mind can find peace all the more valuable. The forest in the southern Black Forest is one such source of relaxation. In Japan, it is called “Shinrin Yoku” – “bathing in the forest air.” It's not about hiking at a fast pace, but about conscious perception: standing still, breathing, listening, letting go. Health resorts that offer forest bathing include Bad Dürrheim, Schluchsee, Lenzkirch/Saig, Schönwald, and Todtmoos. Spending time in the forest can help reduce stress levels and give you new energy. Plants such as spruce trees, ferns, and mosses emit fine fragrances, known as terpenes, which can have a calming effect. Coniferous forests in particular can help to reduce the stress hormone cortisol, while mixed forests can support the cardiovascular system. Those who move with their senses open will experience how movement can slow down and give rise to new strength.

And those seeking relaxation after exercise and fresh mountain air will find it in the region's spas and thermal baths. The health resorts with the designation “mineral/thermal spa” include, for example:
The Markgräflerland region in the southern Black Forest offers a Mediterranean lifestyle. Named after the Margraves of Baden, it delights visitors with its picturesque landscape, culinary diversity, magnificent vineyards, idyllic wine villages, and mild climate. In spring, thousands of cherry trees blossom here, creating a riot of color. In addition to wine and sunshine, the spas offer soothing hot springs. The region is also known for its excellent cuisine, from Michelin-starred restaurants to cozy country inns and wine taverns serving regional wines and specialties. The wines thrive in the hills between the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest. The best way to experience the wine, cuisine, and landscape is to hike the “Markgräfler Wiiwegli” trail, which has several stages between Bad Bellingen and Freiburg. There are also mindful walks with breathing exercises and perception training, bike paths, and hiking trails.
Places with spas in the Markgräflerland region include Badenweiler with the Cassiopeia Therme, where thermal water bubbles up from artesian springs, Bad Bellingen with the Balinea Therme, which offers everything from classic thermal baths and saunas to modern wellness facilities, and Bad Krozingen with the Vita Classica Therme, where bathing and sauna pleasures are at home.
In addition to nature, sometimes an urban complement is also needed to feel good. In the southern Black Forest and Upper Rhine region, these are the cities of Freiburg and Bad Säckingen. They invite you to stroll through the historic old town, enjoy culture and history, Baden cuisine, and small cafés.
In addition to health resorts and wellness facilities, the southern Black Forest also offers nature for your well-being. Fresh mountain air, sunshine, and forests give you new energy, while hot thermal springs provide warmth and serenity. Between the spring region, the Upper Black Forest, the Upper Rhine, and the Markgräflerland, prevention can become an experience—with beautiful landscapes, clear air, and culinary delights.

The origins of spa culture in the Black Forest lie among rolling hills, dark fir trees, and hot springs. The northern Black Forest is famous for its thermal baths, historic spa hotels, and healing climate, which has attracted people seeking peace and regeneration for centuries. Today, modern spas combine tradition with sustainable health concepts and nature experiences.
The history of bathing culture in the northern Black Forest, one of Germany's most traditional spa regions, dates back thousands of years. Even the Celts revered the water and hot springs that still bubble up in the spas and thermal baths today. The Romans used these springs as part of their “ars vivendi” – the art of living. They built magnificent bathing facilities where treatments such as massages, sweat cures, and drinking therapies were offered. After the fall of the Roman Empire, this tradition was temporarily forgotten. In the 18th century, it was rediscovered and numerous new spas and thermal baths were built.
Modern spas continue the centuries-old tradition, no longer as sacred temples or expressions of the art of living, but as contemporary retreats for health, relaxation, and well-being. They combine the bathing culture of bygone times with the present. The spa resorts with thermal baths in the northern Black Forest that preserve and continue this tradition include:
• Waldbronn
• Bad Herrenalb
• Bad Wildbad
• Bad Liebenzell
• Bad Teinach-Zavelstein
• Gaggenau-Bad Rotenfels
An important part of spa culture is water as a natural remedy. It is the basis of all life – in nature and in humans. Around 67% of the human body consists of water. Only a small proportion of the world's water reserves can be used as fresh water or groundwater, serving not only as drinking water but also as a healing source. Thermal water comes from natural springs with a temperature of at least 20 °C. If it is also rich in minerals, the location is considered a mineral thermal spa. This water is used to promote health and well-being and is an important part of the spa tradition.
One key application of water as a natural remedy is the Kneipp cure, which was developed by Sebastian Kneipp back in the 19th century. It is an integral part of many health resorts and is used to promote general well-being. Thermal baths and health resorts in the northern Black Forest also offer Kneipp cures or have public Kneipp facilities, including the health resorts of Schömberg and Bad Peterstal-Griesbach.
The connection between nature and health extends far beyond thermal baths and healing waters. The air, climate, and forests can also play a crucial role in our regeneration and health.
The healing climate of these health resorts has a therapeutic effect, as it can be particularly beneficial to health. It is free from harmful environmental influences and can have a positive effect on the respiratory tract, skin, and immune system. In these health resorts, pure, low-pollen air and balanced temperatures provide ideal conditions for relaxation and regeneration.
Most of the health resorts in the northern Black Forest offer health programs in spa hotels or thermal baths as well as nature experiences. For example, hikes on the high-altitude climate trails, which can strengthen the immune system and offer the opportunity to experience the beneficial climate firsthand. The health resorts in the northern Black Forest that bear the title “healing climate health resort” include:
• Bad Herrenalb
• Bad Wildbad
• Bad Liebenzell
• Bad Teinach-Zavelstein
• Dobel
• Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach
• Schömberg
• Bad Peterstal-Griesbach
With its healing properties and fresh air, the forest in the northern Black Forest has become an oasis of calm where many people can find regeneration. These natural forces can be experienced through forest bathing. Health resorts for forest bathing include Bad Rippoldsau-Schapbach with its scenic hiking trails, Waldbronn with a relaxing walk through the spa gardens, Bad Wildbad with its “forest bathroom” on the Sommerberg, and Bad Liebenzell with the Monbach Gorge and the Augenblick hike.
You can also breathe in cool, mineralized air in healing galleries, disused mines, or caves. This special air is regularly renewed by natural processes and can be beneficial for respiratory and lung diseases. Heilstollen therapy, also known as speleotherapy, makes use of the pure climate conditions underground and is a special form of climate therapy that can have a soothing effect on asthmatic and other respiratory diseases. One of these Heilstollen is located in Neubulach in the northern Black Forest, where visitors can enjoy the fresh, mineralized air deep underground.
In the northern Black Forest, in the heart of the Black Forest National Park, history, nature, and health merge into a harmonious whole. Thermal water, clear forest air, and the special climate interact here and allow body and mind to find peace. Perfect for pure relaxation and recharging your batteries.

The climate has always had a major influence on our well-being. Relaxation is best achieved in an environment with balanced temperatures and constant humidity. Recovery processes are also accelerated under the right climatic conditions. The so-called “healing climate”, including the pure air, is natural and free from harmful environmental influences. As the name suggests, it can have a healing effect on the body.

Gentle climate
The gentle climate in regions with low levels of irritation has great recreational potential: this climate is characterized by a balanced temperature and humidity. Baden-Württemberg, where a temperate climate prevails, is home to numerous climatic health resorts. Here, the climatic conditions are used for health therapy and disease prevention.
Stimulating climate
It is not only a gentle climate with high air purity and constant temperature that has a positive effect on body and mind. Unusual weather conditions also “train” the immune system. In the low and high mountains, people therefore rely on the vitalizing effects of the stimulating climate. The unaccustomed differences in altitude, strong winds and the sometimes strong temperature fluctuations have a stimulating effect on the body. The stimulating climate increases the activity of the immune system and strengthens the body's defenses in a natural way.
Healing cave
Healing cave therapy, also known as speleotherapy, is a special form of climate therapy. It makes use of the exceptional and pure climatic conditions below the earth's surface.
Awards serve as a seal of quality in health tourism. In order to be awarded a label, certain standards must be met in the area of medical facilities and tourist infrastructure. The state's health resort law defines these requirements. The following awards in Baden-Württemberg are based on the particularly good climatic conditions in the respective locations:
Climatic health resorts
Natural, free from harmful environmental influences, constant temperature and humidity - these are all characteristics of a climatic health resort. The climate there can have a health-promoting effect and serve therapeutic purposes.
Places with healing caves
Disused mines or caves offer not only space but also excellent conditions for healing gallery therapy. The particularly pure air in its original form can alleviate asthmatic illnesses.
Schömberg is a “premium class” climatic health resort with a long tradition of curing respiratory diseases. With three clinics, 70% forest cover and an optimal topographical location, Schömberg offers particularly good, oxygen-rich and low-irritant air - ideal conditions for the health-promoting effects of the forest. The spa and healing forest is open to all tourists, citizens, clinic patients, etc.
A spa and healing forest is a specially selected forest area that can contribute to health promotion through various properties. It is used for primary prevention, to prevent illnesses, and secondary prevention, to prevent their worsening or recurrence. The healing forest is used specifically for therapeutic treatments to make it easier to deal with illnesses and alleviate their effects - tertiary prevention in its purest form. Chronic diseases can also be treated there to alleviate them.
The positive effects of a stay in the spa and healing forest can be manifold:
The spa and healing forest is particularly helpful for:

The Schömberg spa and healing forest offers various themed trails and stations aimed at promoting health and well-being:
Please note: Some paths and stations are not barrier-free due to the surface and gradients. People with limited mobility are recommended to walk the paths with a companion.

Neubulach, surrounded by the picturesque hills of the northern Black Forest, hides a little secret that captivates many: The Neubulach Healing Gallery - a place where history meets nature and a therapeutic masterpiece is created.
The microclimate in the Neubulach Healing Gallery is a real therapeutic miracle. With constantly cool temperatures between 6 and 8°C, fresh, mineral-enriched air flows through the gallery. This natural air flow ensures that the air is renewed every 15 minutes, with dust and allergen particles settling due to the high humidity. As this cool, moist air is inhaled and warmed in the body, water is drawn out of the airways, making breathing easier and activating the cilia in the bronchial tubes. The result? A strengthened immune system and optimal conditions for therapeutic success. A real insider tip from Neubulach!
The therapeutic effect of the healing tunnel is impressive and scientifically proven. Here are some of the possible areas of application:

"Pureness" in the Healing Gallery is not just a word, it is a feeling. A place where the world stays outside and the focus is on the here and now. No noise, no distractions, no accessibility. Just pure, unadulterated nature. These quiet, mindful moments in the Heilstollen have a very positive effect on patients suffering from burnout, exhaustion and sleep problems.

"For the past five years, I have gone to the Neubulacher Stollen for therapy ten times in spring and ten times in fall. I'm doing well today without getting sick even once in winter (as is usually the case). That is very special for me. My bronchitis and cough are gone. After just two visits to the Stollen, I hardly noticed anything of my allergy to willow catkins. The Stollen did me a lot of good. It's comfortable in a sleeping bag. You can study and then I'm fit for school the next day."
Florian R., Stuttgart

Constant sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes - just some of the annoying symptoms that plague pollen allergy sufferers from spring to fall. Almost one in five Germans suffers from a pollen allergy, and the number is constantly rising. Many allergy sufferers seek relaxation by the sea or in the high mountains during their vacation. However, Baden-Württemberg also offers excellent destinations for day or weekend trips to take a short "allergy break" - the healing climate is waiting for you!
Healing climate health resorts are characterized by special features climatic conditions and high air quality - conditions that, when combined, are proven to promote health. Particularly interesting for pollen allergy sufferers: low air pollution, little fine dust, reduced pollen load and fewer allergens overall.

The ideal travel time depends on your individual allergy and your specific destination - not all health resorts with healing climates are suitable for every allergy in every season. Before your visit, you should always get the latest pollen forecasts. Otherwise, nothing stands in the way of enjoying the fresh air! Relaxing activities like Forest bathing or breathing exercises can also support the recovery of your respiratory tract.
In Baden-Württemberg there is a total of over 20 climatic health resorts. The low mountain climate in the Black Forest is considered special for people with respiratory diseases.
Bad Dürrheim combines healing climatic conditions with the title of “sole spa”. The advantage for allergy sufferers: A visit to the graduation tower can also have a positive effect on the respiratory system! The salt-enriched air has an anti-inflammatory, cleansing and antibacterial effect.
Schönwald received the ECARF quality seal for allergy-friendliness several times. This not only refers to low-pollen air, but also particularly allergy-friendly products and services for people with house dust, animal hair and food allergies.
Healing climatic health resorts are characterized by definition as being therapeutically effective - through a wide variety of climatic stimuli. We already have more details about this in our article on Heilklima explained. But how can it affect our psychological well-being?
The light intensity is more intense in a healing climate and therefore helps to increase the good mood level. As the intensity outdoors is usually above 2,500 lux (light intensity), the production of the sleep hormone melatonin is reduced. We feel fitter, more alert and significantly more vital. For example, the symptoms of seasonal mood swings - also known as the winter blues - can be alleviated just as well by a daily walk outdoors as by an hour of artificial light exposure every day.
Breathing freely and carefree: that is pure well-being. But how can you be sure that the air is actually particularly pure? You can tell by looking at the trees. This is where the so-called bearded lichen feels at home. They only grow in abundance where the air is really pure, e.g. in a state-approved climatic health resort.
The places with healing caves go one step further. The extraordinary climate in the tunnel is a retreat for people with respiratory problems or allergies. The special properties of the mine air: constantly cool (5 to 12 °C), high relative humidity and free of dust, germs, allergens, pollen and ozone.

An important factor for healthy bones, a fit immune system and a good mood is an adequate supply of vitamin D in the body. Precursors of vitamin D are formed in the skin by UVB radiation from the sun. In our latitudes, however, sufficient UVB radiation only reaches the earth in the months from May to October. It is therefore important to replenish the body's own depots in the summer months, as only ten to 20 percent of the required vitamin D can be absorbed through food. Depending on your skin type and the time of year, it is therefore recommended to expose yourself to the sun for ten to 25 minutes to boost vitamin D production.

Get out, exercise and enjoy nature and the healing climate with its positive health-promoting properties. This improves your mood, boosts your metabolism and increases your immune system.
In a nutshell: exercise + bathing in air = increased well-being.
Healing climate - natural and free from harmful environmental influences - a healthy and intact climate. In a climatic health resort, fine dust and air pollution are foreign words.
Don't misunderstand - good air is a core quality of climatic health resorts and often the number one reason for a visit! Little air pollution, little fine dust, little pollen and allergens in general. A paradise, especially for allergy sufferers and asthmatics. And although high air quality must always be a given, it is only one of many factors for the title of "climatic health resort".

To summarize: The climate in climatic health resorts can be used therapeutically. Here are a few of the climatic stimuli that play a role in certification:
Many stimuli are not necessarily bad, as a distinction is made between a stimulating climate (many stimuli that stimulate the body) and a gentle climate (few stimuli that are gentle on the body).
Exercise in a stimulating climate, for example in the mountains, trains the cardiovascular and immune system. For example, due to fluctuating temperatures, winds, differences in altitude or high levels of sunlight. Gentle climates, on the other hand, are more for regeneration and recovery, perfect for respiratory problems, skin diseases or allergies.
Nowadays, the majority of us spend the whole day sitting in the office or working from home, without any exercise or enough fresh air. As a result, our cardiovascular system atrophies, we become less resilient and more susceptible to illness and stress.
So what we need is exercise, preferably in the fresh air! What's good is what does you good and doesn't over or underchallenge you. Here are a few ideas depending on your training level, region and time of year.

Once you've got your circulation going, you'll find plenty of opportunities to relax and unwind in Baden-Württemberg's climatic health resorts. From culinary insider tips, thermal baths, forests, lakes and parks to cultural highlights and vibrant city centers - spa towns have more to offer than you might think.
